Read about our guest host below:
Susan is a graduate of Vassar College, with an AB degree in Biology and of the University of Pennsylvania, with a PhD in Biochemistry. She is also the proud mom of three. Amanda is a lawyer. Austin is a doctor and April is finishing her master’s degree. But the beat to her heart these days is held by her two adorable granddaughters, Sabine and Poppy.
Susan has always been athletic having participated in track and field, dance, kick line and competitive swimming in her younger days. But at the age of 48, she needed to take her fitness to a new level, having exercised only sporadically while raising her children. She needed a major physical overhaul! She began a fitness program starting with short “jogs” on the treadmill, slowly adding strength exercises learned from her dance foundation. Within three months, she ran in her first 5K race and she’s been running races ever since. Susan finally completed her first full marathon, at age 52, in 2015 and has since run 7 marathons including the Boston Marathon on April 16, 2018, a longtime dream.
Armed with the power of fitness that has changed her life for the better and with the first-hand knowledge that being fit can be achieved or reclaimed at any age, Susan was inspired to earn her Personal Fitness Trainer Certification in 2013, at age 50 and subsequently her Group Fitness Instructor Certification in 2015. She has also earned a specialization in Senior Fitness in 2016 and a specialization in Corrective Exercises in 2019. This career path is a natural extension of her strong scientific background and interest in life sciences. She sincerely wants to share the utter joy, the fun, the mental and physical transformation, the empowerment, that fitness has brought to her life.
Susan is the owner of Susan Zwerling Fitness and is thrilled to work with private personal training clients in her studio in Brookline, MA and via Zoom. She works closely with each client in reaching her or his individual, specific health, wellness, and fitness goals. She also teaches a variety of 5 group fitness classes per week for all abilities via Zoom, exercising together with a fun and supportive community of participants. Susan has recently started a “Walk with a Doc” chapter in Brookline/Newton with Dr. Donna Michelson. Our Walk with a Doc chapter is a walk for exercise program targeted to those aged 50’s though 70’s where participants also learn and can ask questions about current relevant health topics as we move our bodies and get our hearts pumping.
She is also a mentor/coach with DREAMFAR High School Marathon. Susan thoroughly enjoys coaching, mentoring, and training with Boston area high school students to help them achieve their goal of completing a marathon.
On her own time, Susan is often outside, delighting in a magnificent run. Susan also enjoys spending time with her family, exploring new cities and museums and reading biographies.
